Many women feel nervous about gynecological exams-some procedures can be uncomfortable or even painful. But colposcopy isn't as scary as it sounds. For most women, it causes only mild discomfort rather than actual pain.

Here's what typically happens during the procedure:

• Pre-check Requirements

A prior vaginal smear test should rule out infections like trichomoniasis, candidiasis, or gonorrhea.

• Positioning & Prep

You'll lie in the lithotomy position (similar to a Pap smear).

The doctor gently inserts a speculum to expose the cervix and cleans the area with a cotton swab.

• Initial Examination

The colposcope's light and lens are adjusted to focus on your cervix for a broad visual assessment.

• Acetic Acid Test

A 3% acetic acid solution is applied to the cervix.

After 1–2 minutes, the doctor checks for abnormal borders or patterns, reapplying the solution every 3–5 minutes if needed.

• Biopsy (If Necessary)

An iodine solution helps highlight suspicious areas.

Tiny tissue samples may be taken from abnormal spots for further testing-this feels like a quick pinch.

• Practice slow breathing during the procedure.
• Bring a trusted friend or request a female doctor if it helps you relax.
